TWAS THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS

Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house
Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse.
The stockings were hung by the chimney with care,
In hopes that St Nicholas soon would be there.

The children were nestled all snug in their beds,
While visions of sugar-plums danced in their heads.
And mamma in her ‘kerchief, and I in my cap,
Had just settled our brains for a long winter’s nap.

When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from the bed to see what was the matter.
Away to the window I flew like a flash,
Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash.

The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow
Gave the lustre of mid-day to objects below.
When, what to my wondering eyes should appear,
But a miniature sleigh, and eight tinny reindeer.

With a little old driver, so lively and quick,
I knew in a moment it must be St Nick.
More rapid than eagles his coursers they came,
And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name!

"Now Dasher! now, Dancer! now, Prancer and Vixen!
On, Comet! On, Cupid! on, on Donner and Blitzen!
To the top of the porch! to the top of the wall!
Now dash away! Dash away! Dash away all!"

As dry leaves that before the wild hurricane fly,
When they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky.
So up to the house-top the coursers they flew,
With the sleigh full of Toys, and St Nicholas too.

And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the roof
The prancing and pawing of each little hoof.
As I drew in my head, and was turning around,
Down the chimney St Nicholas came with a bound.

He was dressed all in fur, from his head to his foot,
And his clothes were all tarnished with ashes and soot.
A bundle of Toys he had flung on his back,
And he looked like a peddler, just opening his pack.

His eyes-how they twinkled! his dimples how merry!
His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry!
His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow,
And the beard of his chin was as white as the snow.

The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth,
And the smoke it encircled his head like a wreath.
He had a broad face and a little round belly,
That shook when he laughed, like a bowlful of jelly!

He was chubby and plump, a right jolly old elf,
And I laughed when I saw him, in spite of myself!
A wink of his eye and a twist of his head,
Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread.

He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work,
And filled all the stockings, then turned with a jerk.
And laying his finger aside of his nose,
And giving a nod, up the chimney he rose!

He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle,
And away they all flew like the down of a thistle.
But I heard him exclaim, ‘ere he drove out of sight,
"Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good-night!"

Well, we find ourselves in the middle of winter - in the Nothern Hemisphere - and in so many places around the world it's freezing, despite global warming... ''ahem''
That's why some of us get flu or a severe cold. Additionally we go through sneeze fits and or cough fits Ugh not very nice, is it?

Ahh! ¡Deja de agobiarme!

Sometimes as we're ill with flu or a cold we have a good excuse not to get nagged. We can get nagged by moms, wives, girlfriends, dads, husbands, boyfriends, bosses... Ah! Stop nagging me! Get off (of) my back!!!

As you get recovered from flu or a severe cold everything gets back to normal and the nagging comes back too!! Then in certain situations at some point you need to vent you need to blow off some steam

LAYAWAY

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZtoSD-rvJxE

Yes it's Dec 24th thus it's Christmas Eve. Looking around through the amazing Daily Dictation ''video library'' I find this great story that fits perfectly what we call ''Christmas spirit''. It's a great DD episode in terms of pronunciation and culture. Shane breaks it down for you in his own fashion that we enjoy so much, don't we. Take note of this term: Layaway.

Blog Post 20th

I won't want one  -    I won one -   Won't you want one?

The sentence at the top left is what Shane presents to you as an example. The vowel sounds are always an issue to Spanish speakers. Listen carefully, repeat, get those sounds down. Specially the difference between ''want'' and ''won't'' since in American English are very different. Maybe among those three sounds ''won't'' is what varies most.

Go straitght to 13:50 to start the dictation. One more time Coach Shane, put your listening comprehension to the test using Seinfeld. Seinfeld is one of the most successful shows of all time in America. Everyone knows Seinfeld, it's just a true cultural model and it's the show we studied in depth in DDM. As Coach Shane says himself it's a ''gold mine'' when it comes to learning real English.

Post 19th: Coach Shane more than just an English Coach

Hi everyone: Here's my first post to Miguel's blog who I thank for having me among his collaborators.

I think this one might be my best both piece of advice and post I am able to bring on. I am not going to talk about Coach Shane's awesome English teaching method. I hope to do it in the future though.

Shane is the kind of person you should approach in life: Full of energy, positive, optimist... whether we are talking about teachers, coworkers or friends~~

In my personal experience it just took me a few minutes to click with him. It is as if I had known him. It must be what they call ''charisma''.

There is much more to Shane than just a plain English teacher or coach that is the way he likes to call himself. With him you will learn English, of course, yet also history, philosophy, topical issues, you will make friends and much more.

I have searched and found lots of English teaching sites on line, hundreds,  yet I stick with a couple of them. Most of them are REALLY boring where you hear about things that have little to do with the real deal.

I am very happy with Shane and his channels. I have followed him for 4 months. I can tell I have improved very much. I had a low level of listening comprehension and now I am getting close to intermediate. Of course I work on it as much as I can which is 2 hours every day.

I can assure you something: Following Shane will not be boring at all. He doesn't do magic on you. You will not mastering English in, say, 3 months time. It takes lots of practice and perseverance yet when you have fun you want to make efforts and even get ants in your pants to get into the next lesson.

Once again, the bottom line of this post is: Just approach these kinds of people and see how your life changes for the better.

A. ¿Por qué conduces tan lento? ¡Date prisa que vamos a llegar tarde!

Why are you driving this slow? Hurry up we're going to be late!

B. Mira la señal... pone 100, pues voy a 100...

But look at the traffic sign it reads 100, thus I drive 100

We're on a road which is in perfect condition, daytime, no rain and it's not windy, what's the point?

B. Pues cumplir las normas. Hay que respetar las normas.

Following the rules. You must respect the rules.

I don't mean breaking the rules nor pedal to the metal. I'm just talking about common sense.

You know me I'm a stickler when it comes to this stuff

A. ¡Bah, tonterías!

See as nobody drives 100 on this road? Because it's pointless. You should go with the flow and not to be that much of a stickler, specially when it's pointless.

Daily Dictation

Here's a case in point of how important culture is when it comes to listening comprehension. Proper names, specific vocabulary words...

The dictation kicks off from 4:10. As usual, before that, you get the answers to the former dictation.

¿Qué harías si pudieses empezar tu vida desde cero otra vez?  Empezarla de nuevo ''Do it over'' Me refiero a ser tú, pero sabiendo lo que sabes ahora. Sería interesante, ¿verdad?  Bueno puedes ahorrarte tu lista the list of do overs porque es un sueño que no se hará realidad jamas... al menos, literalmente.

What if you could start your life from scratch? Do it over. I mean being yourself, knowing what you know today. That would be interesting, right? Now you can save your list of do-overs since that's a dream that will never come true, at least, literally.

If someone is honest with you and tells you that something can be improved, do it over, maybe you shouldn't take it hard because that feedback might help you keep on your toes. Maybe that person's intentions are good.

¿Qué tal salio? Turn out ¿Mejor? ¿Ves? ¡Al final resulta que mereció la pena! Ah, ¿no? Bueno pues ¡inténtalo de nuevo!

How did it turn out? Better? See? It turns out it paid off! Aw, it didn't? Well, so do it over!

A- ¡Bien!

A- Joder...

English Version

A- Seriously, you can't keep being a party animal for good! At some point, you've got to grow up, settle down and go away with all those unhealthy habits don't ya think?

B- Well, I guess you're right I should start thinking about take care of myself and whatnot...

A- Good! That's smart of you

B- Well I guess I'm a sensible person and recognize I have got a problem and that's the first step to sort it out. I came up with an idea, I think we will go partying to celebrate that I'm becoming a new guy  so we will do it up, we're going to Vegas!

A- Oh shit...

DD75

First of all just go to 7:26 onwards to listen to DD75. It's quite tough not only for the speed but also due to the words. This is a case point where these two elements meet:
  1. Pronunciation - Listening comprehension
  2. Culture - Vocabulary: 12k 5k Kid Dash
These two elements are the core of Coach Shane's method and he's definitely ahead of  the pack.

For the answers and explanation the following video 76

A- Hey! ¿Qué vamos a hacer este finde? "What's up this weekend?"

''I'm gonna kick back''

A- ¿Cómo?

A- ¿De veras? Pues te tomo la palabra ''I'm counting on you''

English Version

A- Hey! What's up this weekend? It's gonna be nice out there! We might grab the mountain bikes and take a nice ride, right? How about if we go to the movies? It's been a while since we didn't go to the movies anymore! Maybe we might go clubbing and drink like a fish! Well, that might not be a good idea... Are you in?

B- Well, I don't know... I think I'm gonna stay home... I'm gonna kick back

A- What!? Are you gonna stay home? Are you kidding me? A month in a row without a day off and now you got a chance, are you gonna kick back?!

B- All right... We'll go to the movies, promise.

A- Really? I'm counting on you.

Now, vowel sounds are always an issue to Spanish speakers. In American English it turns even trickier. Well that's nothing we can't sort out with knowledge and practice

12th Post: DD50: Especial DD.

Daily Dictation 50.

DD 50 is kinda special for two reasons. It's English accent and the dialog has an expression you might not know yet.  That's why we are here, right?

Personally I can't just stand the English accent, that's one man's opinion and it's good for us expose ourselves to different sounds once in a while. Coach Shane focuses on American English. Now even within USA you get different sounds. The bottom line here is that we manage to MASTER the brilliant Coach Shane's method. Once we get it down, we must practice A LOT, then it becomes easier and easier.

The story is about an English kid that decides to leave home and go to America! because it's growing on him. What a coincidence! we have the same taste!

Post 11

Llegados a ese punto la situación es ''a little too much''

Entonces llega la gota que colma y llegamos al límite y se torna insoportable es el momento para ''all too much''

Y qué tal si te encuentras con ''way/far too much'' hay una ligera diferencia con ''all too much''

When to know if something is TOO expensive or the ocean is TOO cold or someone talks TOO much or food is TOO salty? The answer to those questions are usually subjective, I mean, it depends on the person, right? This is like when you get close to the threshold but still don't hit the limit. At that point you think of 'a little too much'

And then... you know that last straw that breaks the camel's back... and then we hit the limit turning out unbearable, you can't just take it anymore! Then think of 'All too much'

All too much might be similar to 'far/way too much' and yet there's a slight difference... you wanna find out the difference? Well just check out Coach Shane's clips above.
